Grieg: Peer Gynt Suite No. 1
Program Note by Christopher Clerc
Edvard Grieg (1843-1907) initially wrote this music to accompany the Ibsen play, Peer Gynt. The First Suite contains four out of 28 movements written to accompany the play.
The first movement, Morning Mood, finds Gynt in the Moroccan desert, building a reed flute. Appropriately, the flute takes the melody in one of the most recognizable melodies in Western music.
The second movement, Ase’s Death, features the strings and finds Gynt visiting his mother’s deathbed. The audience can feel Gynt’s anguish as he listens to the woman’s last words until the melody fades into nothing.
The strings are featured with the triangle in Antira’s Dance, the third movement. In the story, Gynt has returned to Morocco and is seduced by the dancing of a local chieftain’s daughter.
Finally, In the Hall of the Mountain King finds Gynt deep underground surrounded by goblins, trolls, and gnomes. The feverish repetition of the music builds and grows to a fitting finale.
