Prokofiev: Lieutenant Kije Suite Symphonique

Program Note by Christopher Clerc

Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953) wrote Lieutenant Kije as the score of a film of the same name. In the plot of the story, the all-powerful Czar, Nicholas I, misreads a military report, and his court full of sycophants, afraid to correct the Czar, create a fictitious officer named Kije. Prokofiev’s Suite is appropriately farcical, but never condescending. While Prokofiev’s music paints a picture of 19th century, careful listeners will hear dissonances more common in 20th century compositions. The tenor saxophone, rarely used in orchestras, is featured in the second and fourth movements.
